July Resident of the Month

Nigel Hey

I am a PGY-3 Anesthesiology resident training in Saskatoon, where I was born and raised! My medical interests include critical care medicine, perioperative medicine, palliative care and medical education. Outside of medicine, I enjoy running, spending time with my wife and young daughter, and going up to the lake with family and friends.

Here are some of the reasons Nigel was chosen as Resident of the Month (As quoted from the nomination letter):

"Nigel has a very warm and welcoming presence that makes every co-resident feel like a close friend. He is also a positive motivator and brings enthusiasm to any resident activity such as pickle ball, laser tag and our resident retreats. This collaborative nature has been previously recognized through his role as class representative and "Spirit of the Year" award during his medical school days. Additionally, he is currently serving a leadership position as the Canadian Anesthesia Society Resident Ambassador for the USask department. "

"Although still in the first half of his residency, Nigel has many accomplishments that are worth celebrating with regards to patient care. He is currently working on a research project in the intensive care unit involving the bereavement process with families and loved ones. For this project, he has won a $10,000 grant from SCPOR fund to recognize his work with patient and families. This is just one example of the care and attention Nigel brings to every patient interaction. Nigel treats every patient like they're his own family. Many patient interactions are quick in the world of anesthesia, but Nigel ensures every patient is actively heard, and felt welcome in the unfamiliar environment of the operating room."

"Outside of medicine, Nigel is a loving husband, friend, brother, and recently, new dad. He understands the importance of having a balanced lifestyle and that is evident through his various passions including playing soccer, hockey, running, spending time at the lake, and most importantly, his commitment to his family. Overall, it is clear that Nigel embodies what it means to be a well-rounded resident. His positive energy shines into his everyday presence through patient interactions, collaboration with colleagues and to his friends and family at home. I strongly nominate Nigel Hey for this award. Thank you for your consideration."

Congratulations Nigel!
